Something Smells Phishy

What do you do when you receive an email that appears to come from Vantage? Chances are this email warns you of a serious problem that requires your immediate attention. It may use phrases, such as "Immediate Attention Required" or "Please contact us immediately about your account" or "Your debit card has been compromised". Then, the email asks to click on a button that will take you to a website that has our logo and colors all over it. You click on this button and this site is asking for account information like your username, password, debit card number, social security number, etc.

Recently, other forms of phishing are starting to rise. These bad people are sending text messages to phones asking to call a number and basically asking for the same information. This is known as "SMISHING".

The email and/or text message looks like it came from Vantage. The website has Vantage's logo on it. Is it Vantage? NO! NEVER! The fact is; we will never do this. We will never send you an email and/or text message giving you such bad news. There are bad folks out there whose sole purpose is to steal your identity and subsequently steal your money. Don't fall victim to these attempts. Check out some good video provided by OnGuard Online. There is whole bunch of good information on this website on how to look for potential phish scams but more importantly; how you can protect yourself from becoming a victim.

If you've received such messages, please report it immediately. We will sick our Internet Identity dogs on these folks to get these sites shutdown. In most cases, we shut down these sites within minutes of being reported. More importantly, don't let your curious clicks get the best of you. Sometimes, just by clicking on the site can unload a series of bad things on your computer known as BOTNETS or malicious software that can cause a whole lot of hurt and quite frankly could easily steal important information that may be contained on your computer. The purpose of this software is collect whatever information they can and send it back to their servers so they can begin the process of stealing your identity. As I mentioned, there is a great deal of good information out there to help you prevent this from happening to you. They are:

All of these sites provide the basic information that will inform you on:

  • How phishing works
  • How to protect yourself
  • What to do if you fall victim

Your Information Security is of utmost importance to us. To find out more what we're doing click here. On April 13th, we're going to be rolling out a new online banking system that has several enhanced security features. Additionally, the new system will have a built in secure messaging system. This system will be the channel in which we'll be able to communicate with you in a secure manner. No email necessary.

Finally, the Internet is a wonderful thing. However, there is a dark side to it. Keep yourself safe and away from this dark side. Hopefully, I've provided some good tips on how to do that.

Thanks,

Cam

I am a Vantage member, have been for years, and I am receiving SPAM emails from Australia, because I am originally from there and have family members residing there. No doubt these SPAMS are becoming international!! It is from a Credit Union and wants the same info. I have never had an account with this Credit Union either.

True. This is also a very popular time of year for scams, since people are getting their tax return money back.

I received the same phone call Sarah B received from the same number on Monday also. I wanted to contact Vantage Credit Union to let them know about the scam. I came to their web site and found out they already know about it. The bad part about it is I have never been a member of Vantage Credit Union and I still got the call on my cell number. So keep your members advised that the call may come to them any way even from another institiution that they may also be a member of.

Hi, I just received an automated call from 270-568-1978 stating that my visa debit card has been deactivated and to reactivate press 1. I figured it was a scam but pressed 1 to see what they would try and get out of me. The first thing they asked for way my CC number. That's when I hung up. I just wonder how they get my phone number and know where I bank! Scary!

Looks like this is no longer a working number. Often times these criminals just call a block of phone numbers and hope they get a hit. Thanks for sharing.

When call it, it sounds like a fax machine. Which makes it a working number. Is there a way to shut it down? Thanks for the help.

We inquired and since it is answering as a fax line now, we can't take action. It's likely the number was spoofed and redirected. We'll monitor and if the proper parameters are met, that allow us to take action, we'll definitely do so. Thanks.

Hello. Today both my husband and I got text messages from a source saying that our account had been frozen. the email that the message asked us to reply to was tmomail@tmomail.net. We deleted the messages but wanted to pass it on to you.

Hi,

I just received 3 scam text messages in a matter of 5 minutes, can you please take action against these numbers!

SCAM PHONE NUMBERS (please don't call)
514-737-2091
417-712-7451

Thanks for the taking the time to alert us. We were made aware of this phishing attack earlier today and are working with authorities to have the website and phone numbers shutdown. As of 2:30CST, most these are no longer functioning.

how do they know my number and know that i bank with vantage?

They don't. These criminals send out a blanket text to large groups of phone numbers. We get a lot of calls from people who have never been members.

My husband and I got text messages about 5 mins. apart to call 925-415-5334. This is the 2nd time I got this message in less than a month. What can I do to report these phish to a law inforcement agency?

Thanks to all for reporting these phish attempts. There is no need to contact the authorities. This was already done early this morning and the FTC has put up a voice message on the numbers involved.

Thank you again.

I received the same text message. Did not respond. However, I tried to call the Vantage office number and the line was business the entire 2 hours I tried calling.

We apologize for the high call volume. Today was an unusually busy day. We had a merger with another credit union reaching the final stages today (See Spirit info here: http://spirit.vcu.com/), the phishing attempts, and a lot of general questions following the busy shopping weekend. The call volume should slow as the week progresses, but will likely remain higher than normal.

Just received a text from 9099 stating "customer issue, vantage credit union service frozen. please call at 925 415 5334"

I am not, nor have I ever been a member of Vantage CU. Just wanted to report the phising text to help shut them down.

Me too.

Just received a text from 9099 stating "customer issue, vantage credit union service frozen. please call at 925 415 5334"

Thank you for taking the time to let us know.

Received a text message a few minutes ago stating a customer issue and the VCU service is frozen with 802-XXX-XXXX to call. I'm not calling.

We have had several calls and emails about the recent phishing attempts and are working with the proper authorities to get the illegal phone numbers deactivated. Thanks.

I received the same text message today. I didn't respond.

received a phone call from 703/466-XXXX twice last night asking me to press 1 as my vantage visa card had a problem and they needed me to contact them. I did not press 1 and hung up.

Received a call from 518-684-XXXX asking to re-activate my debit card.

Anonymous,

This is a prime example of a phishing attempt. Please don’t respond to this or any message that requests sensitive information. When in doubt, always contact Vantage to verify the validity of the message or to report the phish so we can alert all members to be careful.

Thanks,
Kathy

Funny video that makes a great point. Thanks for posting it and the article!

I got 2 calls. First call was stating it was a Global Marketing Co. that wanted to send a G.C. for gas and Wal-mart. They asked me to verify my address. I asked them how they had my info. and the guy said his supervisor would call back. When she called I told her I already contacted my credit union. The number they called from is 949-256-9125.

Sounds like a scam. The criminals are always thinking up new ways to glean information from people. Here is a link from a Twitter/Facebook post we sent out yesterday listing the top scams of 2009: http://ow.ly/TOIW
