Hot Summer Jobs

Finals are in the air, and students are a bit crabby from those all-nighters; another school year must be coming to an end. If you haven’t already looked into a job for the summer, now’s the time to get busy! You DO want some money in your pockets for all those fun times out with friends, right?

Here are a few suggestions for funding all that summer fun in the sun according to Bankrate's list of the best summer jobs in 2011. It’s all based on interviews with potential employers and others familiar with summer job hiring. Let’s take a look:

  • Kid Care––School is out, so that means younger kids are no longer under the watchful eye of teachers. They need supervision when Mom and Dad are working, making nannies and babysitters in high demand.
     
  • Camp Counselor––Who hasn’t spent a little time at camp? It’s a summer tradition that can last a day, a week, or an entire month. These positions are especially nice for those who like the outdoors. As a bonus, the positions offer important skills down the road like leadership, teamwork and problem solving. The American Camp Association’s website can help you locate a job as a counselor.
     
  • Lifeguard––Pools, lakes, oceans...people love the water when it gets hot, and someone has to be there to make sure all remain safe. If you like the sun on your shoulders and the idea of ensuring the safety of those around you, being a lifeguard is the perfect fit. Break out the sunscreen!
     
  • Amusement Parks––Chances are you already like amusement parks with all the excitement around every corner. Well, why not work around all that excitement? Six Flags St. Louis will be hiring for over 3,000 positions in 2011, including ride operators, lifeguards, cashiers, landscapers, front gate ticket takers, first aid attendants, security officers and more.
     
  • Mall––This is where you’ll find a large collection of retail positions, many with help wanted signs out front. Sporting goods stores, clothing shops, show stores, ice cream shops, restaurants...there’s something for just about everyone. And can you say employee discounts? Many stores offer them. In addition to saving money, working retail can he you learn sales and improve your social skills.
     
  • Be Your Own Boss––Who needs a boss? Make your own hours and write your own paychecks when you work for yourself! Detail vehicles, landscape, walk dogs. What are your talents? Put them to use as a young entrepreneur!
